August 07, 2008

SMITHSBURG -- Smithsburg Councilman Jerome Martin was scheduled to begin physical therapy Thursday for injuries he sustained Monday in a fall from a roof, his wife Terri Callamari said.

Martin underwent surgery on his wrists Wednesday, which went "very well," Callamari said.

Martin, 60,  was on the job Monday when he fell from a roof and broke both wrists, his collarbone, a vertebrae in his neck and some of his ribs, family members said.

He was described as stable Thursday morning at Washington County Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.

An eight-year veteran on the town council and recycling proponent for the town, Jerome Martin owns Smithsburg-based Mar-Cal Construction Co.

Callamari said the business remains open.

"We have very responsible, reliable employees who are stepping up to the plate,"
