Fairs to remember

August 07, 2008|By JULIE E. GREENE

A "tuff truck" competition and a Princess contest are among the new events at Tri-State-area fairs kicking off this month.

The Fulton County (Pa.) Fair starts Sunday, the Jefferson County (W.Va.) Fair kicks off Saturday, Aug. 16, and the Franklin County (Pa.) Fair starts Sunday, Aug. 17.

The Jefferson County Fair has added a tuff truck and car competition and a third night of truck and tractor pulling, so those pulling events won't go as far into the night as they have recently, said Todd Wilt, fair manager.

The West Virginia fair will feature three regional bands rather than a national act this year. Wilt said a big name act didn't seem to be making a difference in attendance, so fair officials are trying smaller groups with local followings.

The Franklin County Fair has added a Princess contest, for ages 11 to 14, to go with its contests for Little Miss, ages 7 to 9, and Fair Queen, ages 16 to 20.

The Fulton County Fair also is trying something new - giving away a flat-screen TV each night at 10 p.m. from Monday, Aug. 11, through Saturday, Aug. 16, said Don DeShong, fairground manager. Enter the drawing with your admission ticket and you must be present to win.
