Martinsburg officials want to spend surplus on City Hall expansion

MARTINSBURG, W.VA. -- City officials are proposing that $1 million from a $1.5 million budget surplus be set aside for an expansion of Martinsburg City Hall and the Martinsburg Police Department, which is also in the building.

The expansion of the building along Queen Street near the intersection of Race Street is needed given the number of employees the city is expected to hire in the future, said Richard Yauger, chairman of the Martinsburg City Council's budget and finance committee.

The city is hoping to hire six additional police officers in coming years, City Council member Gregg Wachtel said.

Yauger said Monday is too early to say how the building might be expanded or when.

The budget and finance committee reviewed the proposal among other spending plans Monday afternoon. The plans will be recommended to city council members Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m., Yauger said.

The $1.5 million surplus comes from the most recently completed fiscal year, Yauger said.

According to Yauger, other areas which the surplus is recommended to be used includes:

o $50,000 for 12 new computers for police department cruisers.

o $25,000 for other city hall renovations.

o $400,000 for street repaving throughout the city.
