Program recognizes emerging artists

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - The Arts & Humanities Alliance of Jefferson County announces a new program called "Emerging Artists."

Funding for the Community Grants for Emerging Artists comes from proceeds from AHA's annual members show, hotel-motel tax, general funds and grants.

The first round of community grants totaled $4,000 for financial aid and scholarship assistance.

Some of the programs that met the goals were: The Old Opera House Annual Summer Youth Camp; the Act I, Young Playwrighting Workshop at the Contemporary American Theater Festival and the Jefferson County Black History Preservation Society.

The program encourages young artists and artists embarking in new directions by providing financial aid and scholarship assistance, as well as providing workshops in professional development for all in the arts and humanities.

"As with any new program, the first year the community grants will identify and fund existing programs specifically designed for young people," said Peter Corum, president of the AHA board of directors.
