Landmarks contest gets under way

August 03, 2008|By JULIE E. GREENE

You read me right. $300.

That's a Wii player and a Wii game. Or about six tanks of gas. (Sad, isn't it?)

So put on your walking shoes and hit downtown Hagerstown. The Herald-Mail's 12th annual Landmarks Contest kicks off today and you might win $300.

This year's contest is a bit different, with a twist thrown in. Instead of images, we're asking you to look for 13 letters - A, B, E, E, H, I, L, N, O, T, T, W and Z. Then, tell us the "landmark" - the building or business - at which you found the letter.

All of the letters are pictured on page E3.

The person or family that correctly locates and identifies the most letters will win $300. If there's a tie, our twist comes into effect. The first tiebreaker will be the entry that correctly unscrambles the letters to spell a word of local significance.

If more than one entry correctly identifies all 13 letters and correctly unscrambles the word, then a winner will be randomly drawn from among the names of those who qualify.

This year, we offer two second-place prizes. Two runners-up will receive a $50 gas card each.

As shown on the map on page E1, the boundaries for this year's contest are Prospect Street to Mulberry Street, and Baltimore Street to Church Street/East Avenue. All clues are visible from public sidewalks or alleys.

Identify the images with as much detail as possible: Note the address or location, and name of the building or structure on the numbered entry blank on this page.

You're sure to get plenty of exercise looking for the clues, so wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water. You might even want some sunscreen.

Answers must be submitted to The Herald-Mail by 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25. The answers and the champ's name and photograph will be published Sunday, Aug. 31, in the Lifestyle section.

The winner must be available to be photographed Tuesday, Aug. 26, or Wednesday, Aug. 27.

To be eligible to win, you must live in Washington or Frederick counties in Maryland; Franklin or Fulton counties in Pennsylvania; or Berkeley, Jefferson or Morgan counties in West Virginia.

Employees of The Herald-Mail and their families are not eligible.

Be sure to include your name, address and daytime phone number with your entry form. Only one entry per person.
