Laura J. Whitesides, 81

Laura Jean Whitesides, 81, of Hagerstown, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2008, at her home.

Born Nov. 14, 1926, in Salisbury, Md., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Gladys Quillen Davis.

She was employed by The Review and Herald Publishing Co., retiring in 1990.

She was a member of Hagerstown Seventh-day Adventist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Cyril G. Whitesides Sr., whom she married Feb. 2, 1945; four daughters, Vivien L. Jenkins of Bremerton, Wash., Jeanne M. Bursott and Sharon K. Charnoski, both of Clinton, Iowa, and Christine B. Mackey of Hagers- town; two sons, Cyril G. Whitesides Jr. of York, Pa., and Steven C. Whitesides of Hagerstown; one sister, Mary Wiley of Salisbury; one brother, Richard Davis of Salisbury; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Potts and Dorothy Giordano; and one brother, Robert Davis.


A memorial service will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Hagerstown Seventh-day Adventist Church. Richard L. Remmers will officiate. Private burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal, Ill.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:30 to 7 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.

James E. Jordan, 76

PAW PAW, W.Va. - James E. Jordan, 76, of Paw Paw, died Thursday, July 31, 2008 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born June 3, 1932, in Temple, Ga., he was the son of the late Clifford and Minnie Johnson Jordan.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and an aircraft mechanic.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sonia Rickman Jordan; two daughters, Janet Schultz of Bunker Hill, W.Va., and Kathy Lilly of Inwood, W.Va.; three sons, Bobby R. Jordan of Martinsburg, David Jordan of Glen Burnie, Md., and Ronald Jordan of Tennessee; one sister, Maryann Verry of Annapolis, Md.; two brothers, Jack and William Jordan, both of Florida; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at a later date.

Eleanor R. Young, 75

SHADE GAP, Pa. - Eleanor R. (Shafer) Young, 75, of Shade Gap, Pa., and formerly of Greencastle, Pa., went home to be with the Lord Friday, Aug. 1, 2008, at 6:10 a.m. following her battle with cancer.

Born Dec. 28, 1932, in Washington Township, Pa., she was one of six daughters of the late Ralph and Nettie (Kline) Shafer of Rouzerville, Pa.

Eleanor last was employed by Corning Glass in Greencastle for more than 30 years, and also worked part time at Bon-Ton at Valley Mall in Hagerstown.

She so much enjoyed being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and working with her flowers.

Surviving family are her husband of 57 years, Harold G. Young; sons, Carroll (wife Donna) Young and Wayne (wife Tina) Young, both of Greencastle; five grandchildren, Amy, Angie, Shane, Shanelle and Dustin; seven great-grandchildren, Damian, Curtis, Madison, Ava, Ethan, Cody and Tatum; and five sisters, Dorothy (Ken) Hess, Lois Ellen Valentine and Barbara (John) Cordell, all of Chambersburg, Pa., Mary Louise Harshman of Braddock Heights, Md., and Arlene (Norman) Cosner of Maugansville, Md.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, at 10 a.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, with Pastor Leon Yoder officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.

Dennis B. Brown, 56

CASCADE - Dennis Barrett Brown, 56, of Hill Top Road, died Thursday, July 31, 2008, at his home.

Born July 25, 1952, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Howard C. and Vivian M. Stroster Brown.

He was a writer and culinary artist.

He is survived by his wife, Bridget Kay Brown; one daughter, Lindsay K. Brown of Urbana, Md.; one son, James B. Brown of Frederick, Md.; stepmother, Janet L. Brown of Kensington, Md.; eight sisters and brothers; and nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be today at 3 p.m. in Germantown Church of God Cemetery, Cascade. A memorial service and reception will be at the Brown residence on Hill Top Road in Cascade following burial.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 3 p.m. at Germantown Church of God, Cascade.
