'Hoppers' bats heat up in Hagerstown

The Greensboro Grasshoppers racked up 14 hits against three Hagerstown pitchers and beat the Suns 8-1 at Municipal Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Hunter Mense went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, and Michael Stanton homered, doubled and drove in three runs for Greensboro.

The Suns had 10 hits, but no big ones. They stranded 11 runners on bases and struck out 12 times.

Down 2-0 in the third inning, Hagerstown loaded the bases with no outs against Greensboro starter Matt Mallory. But the Suns only managed one run on a sacrifice fly by Jose Lozada.

Valerio Heredia went 4-for-4 with four singles for Hagerstown. No other Sun had more than one hit.

Jay Voss (3-5), the second of five pitchers used by the Grasshoppers on Sunday, worked the fourth and fifth innings for the win. He allowed only one hit while striking out three.

Suns starter Colton Willems (5-8) pitched four-plus innings in a losing effort. He allowed five runs, five hits and a walk. He hit two batters and struck out two.

Hagerstown concludes its four-game series with Greensboro today, beginning at 7:05 p.m. The Suns won the first two games, 2-1 Friday and 11-3 Saturday.
