Louise R. Ernst, 89

JAN. 22, 1919-JULY 25, 2008

Louise Ruch Firey Ernst, 89, of Towne Oak, Hagerstown, and formerly of Clear Spring, died Friday, July 25, 2008, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Jan. 22, 1919, in Fairview, Md., she was the daughter of the late Joseph Preston Firey and Emma Ruch Firey.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Gaitley Ernst, in 1990.

She was a graduate of Clear Spring High School and Towson State University.

She was formerly a teacher in Washington and Baltimore County school systems.

She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Clear Spring.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph P. Firey Jr. and Robert K. Firey Sr.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Clear Spring. The Revs. Elaine Swinehart and Frederick Faust will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Clear Spring, immediately following the service.


There will be no viewing.

Donald Edward Rowland Sr., 68

JUNE 8, 1940-JULY 26, 2008

FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - Donald Edward Rowland Sr., 68, 1548 Tice Road, Falling Waters, W.Va., died Saturday, July 26, 2008, at his home.

Donald was born in Hagerstown, Md., June 8, 1940, the son of the late Samuel Isaac and Daisy Ellen Domer Rowland.

He was a graduate of North Hagerstown High School, attended Hagerstown Junior College and graduated with a BS degree from Coppin State College.

He was employed with the Western Maryland Railway and then worked at MCTC Hagerstown, for more than 20 years, retiring in 1993.

Donald served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam in the early 1960s.

He was of Pentecostal faith.

Donald was a coach with the Hagerstown Colt Baseball League and the Hagerstown Junior Football League for many years. He was a Minor League catcher for the Baltimore Orioles organization.

He thoroughly enjoyed watching his grandchildren participating in their sports activities.

He was a member of the North American Fish and Game Assn., Potomac Post 202 American Legion, Williamsport, Md., and the VFW of Falling Waters.

Donald is survived by his wife of 43 years, Janet Lee Stevens Rowland; three sons, Donald Edward Rowland Jr., Hedgesville, W.Va., Brian Keith Rowland, Martinsburg, W.Va., and Christopher Allen Rowland, Falling Waters; a brother, Terry Lee Rowland Sr., Hagerstown; six granddaughters, Jessica Rowland, Kayla Rowland, Jordan Rowland, Desirae Rowland, Annabelle Rowland and Laranda Rowland; and five grandsons, Dustin Rowland, Andrew Oyster, Aaron Rowland, Brian Rowland II and Aaron Maertins.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold "Bunky" Domer.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 31, 2008, at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, with Brother Steve Armalt officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, July 30, 2008, from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral home will be open after 9 a.m. Wednesday for the convenience of family and friends.

Military honors will be afforded by Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion, Hagerstown.

Kenneth E. Hoffman, 54

Kenneth E. Hoffman, 54, of West Franklin Street, Hagerstown, died Thursday, July 24, 2008, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Aug. 11, 1953, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Joseph and Francine Fair Hoffman.

He was a graduate of South Hagerstown High School.

He was employed by Thomas' English Muffins.

He is survived by two sons, Toby Hoffman and Chris Hoffman; two brothers, Harry Vaughn and Joseph Hoffman; and companion, Michelle Jackson.

Memorial services will be Saturday at 5 p.m. at New Beginnings Community Church, Hagerstown. Pastor Mark Snyder will officiate.

Virginia M. Kaline, 73

JAN. 23, 1935-JULY 26, 2008

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Virginia M. Kaline, 73, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, July 26, 2008, at Canterbury Center.

Born Jan. 23, 1935, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Robert Langner and Sophie Virginia Reitz Langner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Sherwood Kaline Sr.

She is survived by six daughters, Susan P. Ray and Rose A. Howard, both of Martinsburg, Kathy L. Tharle and Angela M. Kinstler, both of York, Pa., Elaine A. Mitchell of Pasadena, Md., and Alisa H. Sherman of Baltimore; two sons, George S. Kaline Jr. of Abbington, Md., and Douglas R. Kaline of Pasadena; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Fisher.

At her request, there will be no services and burial will be private.
