Hagerstown man faces drug charges

A Hagerstown man faces several drug-related charges after allegedly selling crack cocaine Friday night during a drug sting, according to a Hagerstown Police Department press release.

Kip Young, 51, of 25 Wayside Ave., was charged with distribution of cocaine, possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia, police said.

Young allegedly sold $50 worth of crack cocaine to a police informant, police said.

Police said they targeted the 100 block of South Potomac Street because it has been the source of recent complaints about drug-related activities.

Smithsburg man charged with setting car on fire

SMITHSBURG - A Smithsburg man was charged Saturday with setting his estranged wife's car on fire, according to a press release from the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office.

Brian Lee Wages, 30, of Smithsburg, was arrested Saturday afternoon by Frederick County Sheriff's Department deputies, said Jason M. Mowbray, deputy chief state fire marshal.

Wages was charged with second-degree arson, Mowbray said.

The sheriff's department said in a press release that deputies responded to a home in the 4700 block of John Draper Road, off Stottlemeyer Road, for what was reported as a disconnected 911 call.

About 9:20 a.m., when deputies arrived, they saw a woman who had fled the residence, deputies said. They also saw a car on fire and heard what sounded like gunshots.

Other law enforcement departments responded, too. Neighbors were alerted and local roads were closed, deputies said.

A special services team later found a man inside the home.

Wages allegedly poured an ignitable liquid on Rebecca Gannon's 1995 Chevrolet Camaro and started a fire, Mowbray said.

A neighbor reported the fire.

Gomer was eastbound in a 1985 Ford Mustang on Loop Road, police said.

About 5:10 p.m., the car went into the westbound lane and struck a 2003 West Tri-Axle driven by Arlyn Saltzman, 61, of Greencastle, Pa., police said.

Saltzman, who was not injured, was wearing a seat belt, but Gomer was not, police said.
