Washington County library checked out 1 million items in a year

July 27, 2008

The Board of Trustees and staff of Washington County Free Library have announced that the library checked out more than 1 million items during the 2007-08 fiscal year.

Library Director Mary Baykan attributes this accomplishment to a number of factors. The library continues to expand services to meet the needs of the community. In addition to all of the standard services customers expect to find at their local library, it also offers many of the new technologies - bringing e-books and downloadable DVDs directly to area home computer as well as access to more than 40 databases and educational resources such as tutor.com and askusnow.

A collection of books in Spanish, large print books, and recorded books both on CD and playaways have been added to the library's collection. The library continues to add new books and resources to its collection of more than 345,000 items while working to expand and improve outlets in the county.

Veteran's Park in Smithsburg became home to the new Smithsburg Branch Library in 2006. This year saw the addition of the new 10,000-square- foot facility in Boonsboro. The Keedysville Branch Library is set to begin renovations later this year that will add much needed space for its book collection as well as additional space for programs.

Every time someone checks out a book, links on to the library's Web site, calls or visits the library for help with a question, or attends one of its special programs, they are demonstrating support for their local library system.

Baykan wishes to thank all those who support the library.
