Suns open homestand with a win

Jesus Valdez and Garrett Bass each had two hits and an RBI and Hagers-town pitchers Bradley Meyers and Dan Leatherman combined on a three-hitter as the Suns opened an eight-game homestand Friday night with a 2-1 victory over the Greensboro Grasshoppers at Municipal Stadium.

The Suns took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Mark Gildea singled, advanced two bases on a pair of groundouts and scored on a double to left field by Valdez.

Hagerstown went up 2-0 in the second. Stephen King led off with a double to left, took third on a wild pitch by Kyle Kaminska (5-5) and scored on a single by Bass.

Meyers (7-4) started for the Suns and went 6 2/3 innings for the win, allowing a run, three hits and a walk while striking out six.

After allowing an RBI double to Torre Langley with two outs in the seventh, he was relieved by Leatherman.

Leatherman pitched 2 1/3 perfect innings with three strikeouts for his third save of the year.

Gildea also had two hits for Hagers-town, which had eight on the night against three Greensboro pitchers.

Michael Burgess went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk for the Suns.
