Martinsburg man arrested in S.C. on firearms, drug charges

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Martinsburg man was taken into custody in Columbia, S.C., July 17 on a three-count indictment alleging firearms and drug violations. according to U.S. Attorney Sharon Potter.

Samuel Oral Thorne, 33, has had an initial appearance in a court in South Carolina and was detained pending his arrival in the Northern District of West Virginia to face charges.

Indicted by a federal grand jury in September 2007, Thorne is facing one count of possession of a handgun shipped by interstate commerce by a person previously convicted of a crime.

The other two counts allege Thorne distributed marijuana on two occasions in 2007 in Berkeley County, W.Va., according to Potter.

If convicted, Thorne faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 for the handgun offense; and a maximum of 5 years and a fine of $250,000 on each of the two drug counts.
