CHAMBERSBURG, PA. -- The Chambersburg Area School Board on Wednesday accepted "with great regret" the resignation of its president, Thomas Orndorf.

Orndorf, a local obstetrician and gynecologist, had served on the board for 10 years.

In his resignation letter, Orndorf said the decision came due to "health, family and work" reasons. He wrote that he greatly enjoyed his time on the board.

"I offer my best wishes for its continued success," Orndorf wrote.

The board members in attendance at Wednesday's meeting unanimously selected Stanley Helman as the new president. Helman has served 13 years on the board.

The board has 30 days to appoint someone to fill Ordnorf's vacancy. Since Orndorf represented Region 4, all candidates must have lived in that area for at least a year.

Region 4 includes most of North and South Guilford Hills, the east end of the Borough of Chambersburg, and the areas near Coldbrook Elementary School and Falling Spring Elementary School.

The board said that school administrators will accept letters of interest from candidates for the position, then schedule interviews.

Board member Renee Sharpe described Orndorf as "passionate about students" and "very bright and analytical."

"He was really kid-centered," Helman said.
