Poster winner

Congratulations to Stephanie Toone for placing first in Washington County Soil Conservation District's Soil and Water Stewardship Poster Contest titled "Water is Life."

She was awarded $150 for her accomplishment. Stephanie's poster will be entered in the statewide contest this month. If she wins at that level, her poster will be entered at the national level for judging in 2009. Stephanie will attend Hood College in August.

VBS at Calvary Temple

A vacation Bible school titled "God's Big Backyard" will start Monday and run through Aug. 1 from 6:45 to 9 p.m. at Calvary Temple, 147 S. Conococheague St.

Crab feed

The Williamsport Volunteer Fire and EMS will be holding a crab feed fundraiser Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Red Men Pavilion, starting at 4 p.m. Crabs will be served from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets cost $40 a person and includes firemen's milk, crabs, chicken, coleslaw, corn on the cob and a DJ. You must be at least 21 years of age to attend. Carnival coming

A carnival sponsored by the Downsville Ruritan and the Funkstown Rod and Gun Club will be held in Byron Memorial Park at Pavilion 3 parking lot from Aug. 25 to 30. Entertainment is planned each night, including from gospel, Williamsport Community Band, karaoke and a surprise group. Food and carnival rides will be available. A cruise-in with the local hot rod group will be Aug. 30, from 5 to 9 p.m.

Alumni picnic

An All-WHS alumni covered-dish picnic is planned for Aug. 8 at the Potomac Fish and Game Club, starting at 5:30 p.m. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided. For more information, call Belinda Rupp at 301-223-6210.

Class of 1968

The WHS class of 1968 will celebrate its 40th reunion Saturday, Aug. 9, starting at 6 p.m. at the Potomac Fish and Game Club. For more information, call Belinda Rupp at 301-223-6210 or go to on the Web.

Combined reunion

The WHS classes of 1972 and 1973 are planning a combined reunion. Invitations have been mailed out and the reservation deadline is Aug. 13. If you did not receive an invitation, contact Suzanne Grogan Grove at 301-733-4515 or The reunion is scheduled for Sept. 13 with social hour beginning at 6 p.m. at the Potomac Fish and Game Club.

National Night Out 

Mark your calendars to attend the town's National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 5, starting at 5 p.m. at the swimming pool with a picnic and pool party. This event is designed to strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. 

Summer bash 

Williamsport American Legion Post 202 S.A.L. Squadron and Unit 202 are holding a summer bash Saturday, Aug. 16, from 2 to 11 p.m. Tickets costs $15 per person. The menu includes barbecue chicken, ribs, scalloped potatoes, baked beans and coleslaw.  Members and guests can get tickets at the Legion on Legion Avenue.  A horseshoe tournament will be held. Music will be provided by Defyance.
