Jefferson County land-use updates to be shared at hearing tonight

July 21, 2008

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - The process of developing new land-use regulations for Jefferson County continues tonight with a public hearing on the latest proposals.

The Jefferson County Planning Commission will hold the hearing at 7 p.m. at the Jefferson High School auditorium.

Besides taking public comment on the plan, the planning commission ultimately will be able to make recommendations on the plan's consistency with the county's comprehensive plan, which determines how the county should grow in coming years, officials said.

A firm hired by the county to work on the new regulations said the county's current land-use laws have not been effective in managing urban and suburban growth or protecting agricultural areas.

The new plans were earlier criticized as being complicated and contradictory.

County officials have been working on the proposals since then.
