Longmeadow Lions Club officers installed

District Gov. Susan Timmons installed the following Longmeadow Lions officers at the July 10 meeting:

Carol J. Alphin, president; T. Reed Hardy, 1st vice president; C. Thomas Bowers, immediate past president; Donald W. Talbert, secretary; A. Craig Daniels, treasurer; William C. Myers and Ronald E. Reeder, tail twisters; Donald W. Talbert, lion tamer; T. Reed Hardy, membership chair; William C. Myers, Rod R. Reed, James W. Staley and William C. Staley, directors.

The club's annual picnic will be at the Timmons' residence on Thursday, starting at 6 p.m.

Longmeadow Lions Club will host the District Governors Change of Banners meeting on Aug. 2 at American Legion Post 42.

An outing is planned for Thursday, Aug. 14, at the Totem Pole Playhouse. Contact Carol Alphin for details.

The Longmeadow Lions Club has a team consisting of Carol Alphin, Reed Hardy, Rod Reed, Ron Reeder and Don Talbert who are trained to conduct preschool vision screening and are available to set up this testing of preschool children at no charge.



On July 14, the TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 77 presented its awards for the month of June. The chapter had a net loss of 55 3/4 pounds and 36 members had perfect attendance.

Joan Jones and Gordana Ritchie each had perfect attendance and no gains for the month.

The Division I winner was Gordana Ritchie with a 10-pound loss and Division II winner Linda Lemen had a 3 1/4-pounds loss. Several members received charms for 10 to 60 pounds loss. The Shining Stars for June were Mary Jo Cunningham and Gordana Ritchie. Linda Lemen presented awards for walking mileage. The group welcomed Kathy Freese as a new member.

Patsy Price will lead the program on "Emotional Eating" today. The chapter meets Mondays at First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave. Weigh-in is from 7:15 to 9:20 a.m. The meeting is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The group is going to start exercising again at 8:30 a.m. For more information, contact Donna at 301-223-8143 or Patsy at 301-582-2292.

Cooling Scarves project a success

Thanks to all who helped with the Thrivent Financial Cooling Scarves Project.

The group made more than 600 scarves to send to the troops overseas.

The group, however, did not use all of the donations, so the members are going to continue to make scarves. The group will be making scarves again on Monday, July 28.

Legion Post 42 to install officers

American Legion Post 42 will hold its installation of officers Saturday, July 26, at 6:30 p.m. at the post home on Northern Avenue.

Complimentary cocktails and hors d'hourves will be served at 6:30 p.m. A buffet will be at 7:15 p.m. with homemade stuffed chicken breast with gravy, glazed carrots, peas, coleslaw, rolls and butter, coffee or tea and dessert. Tickets cost $7.

TOPS 338

Best TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 338 loser was Lisa King with 2 pounds. The KOPS (Keeping Off Pounds Sensibly) member was Lois Woldord with 8 pounds. The group had two speakers: Cathy Smith's program was on Hospice, and Wendy spoke about osteoporosis.

At one of the meetings in June, each member shared an exercise and the group sang from its TOPS song book.

The group meets at First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave. Weigh-in is from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. The meeting is from 6 to 7 p.m. Visitors are welcome. Call Marie at 301-824-3245 for more information.

TOPS 446

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 446 members heard Mary talk about some of the speakers at the TOPS Convention she attended in Chicago this year. One speaker was Nick Yphantides, M.D., known as Dr. Nick. He lost 270 pounds by eating much less and walking many miles. He has a book out titled, "The Big Fat Greek Diet."

Wednesday's meeting is to be held at Pangborn Park for the summer picnic. Weigh-in will begin at 10:30 a.m.

VBS at Paramount begins tonight

The Paramount Brethren In Christ Church on Longmeadow Road will be having a Veggietales VBS, "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything," the week of July 21-25 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  All kids are welcome aboard & no one will be asked to walk the plank.  For more information, call 301-790-2492.
