Bentley's Bagels moving to new home in Hagerstown

July 21, 2008|By DAN DEARTH

HAGERSTOWN -- Bentley's Bagels on West Washington Street in Hagerstown will close its doors at the end of this month and reopen a few weeks later just up the street in the building that once housed the Courtyard Cafe, co-owner Jordan Lessig said Friday.

Lessig said she and her boyfriend, Bentley's co-owner Eric Muritz, couldn't reach an agreement with their landlord to stay at 96 W. Washington St., where they have served the downtown lunch crowd for the last three years.

On Friday, the couple received word -- a few weeks before their existing lease was to expire -- that they would have a new place to go, she said.

"It's a huge weight off our shoulders," Lessig said. "It's less rent, more space and better facilities ... July 30 will be our last day for business."

Lessig said the inside of Bentley's will look a little sparse for the next few weeks as she and Muritz transfer equipment between the two sites. During that time, she said, they intend to run specials to sell the food they have on hand.

For the first few weeks of August, Lessig and Muritz plan to dress up the interior of their new building with tiling and fresh paint, she said. They might take a short vacation, but are shooting to reopen by mid-August.

Because the former Courtyard Cafe at 15 W. Washington St. offers more floor space, they want to expand the menu and hire at least two "reliable" employees, Lessig said. Anyone who is interested may call 301-797-7979.
