Lane closures on Interstate 81 planned in Pa., W.Va.

July 21, 2008

Starting today and continuing through Thursday, from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., motorists might experience delays traveling in the vicinity of the on- and off-ramps of Interstate 81 at Exit 1 for Pa. 163 and at the Welcome Center in Antrim Township, Franklin County.

Maryland State Police in Washington County said the delays might affect interstate travel across the state line into Maryland and cautions drivers to be alert.

Weather-permitting, there will be nighttime and early-morning single-lane traffic restrictions as paving crews mill and resurface the northbound I-81 deceleration and acceleration lanes and the on- and off-ramps, and resurface the southbound I-81 acceleration lane and the Pa. 163 on-ramp to southbound I-81.

Drivers are asked to slow down when driving through the work zone for their safety, as well as for the safety of the workers.

o In West Virginia, the state Department of Transportation's Division of Highways announced last week that nighttime lane closures are scheduled for Interstate 81 between miles 12 and 17.9 in Berkeley County.

The lane closures are scheduled to start at 8 p.m. July 27 and will be in place between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., weather-permitting.

As many as two or three lanes will be closed at one time, and delays are possible. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes when possible.

The lane closures are necessary for joint repair and resurfacing of I-81, which is expected to be completed in two to three months.
