First United Corp.

John F. Barr recently was appointed to the advisory council of First United Corp.

Barr is the president and owner of Ellsworth Electric, and also is president of the Washington County Commissioners.

Barr is a graduate of Boonsboro High School, Washington County Career Studies Center, Hagerstown Community College and Frederick (Md.) Community College. He also completed a four-year apprenticeship program through Associated Builders and Contractors and the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Council.

Potomac Bancshares Inc.

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Mary Clare Eros recently was appointed to the board of directors of Potomac Bancshares Inc., the one-bank holding company for the Bank of Charles Town.

Eros practiced corporate, banking, business and commercial law at Jackson Kelly PLLC until her retirement in 2007.

Eros received a bachelor of arts degree in English literature from St. Louis University in 1968, and obtained her law degree from Georgetown University in 1981. She was awarded an honorary L.L. degree from Shepherd University in 2005.


Eros was appointed by Gov. Joe Manchin to serve on the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission and is a former chair of the commission. She is co-chair of the Eastern Panhandle United Way campaign.

Wilson College

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Lorna Duphiney Edmundson, president of Wilson College, was elected chair of the Association of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities (APCU) for 2008-09 at the organization's recent annual meeting in Savannah, Ga.

Edmundson, who was named president of Wilson College in 2001, has served on the APCU board since 2004.

Washington County Board of Social Services

The Washington County Board of Social Services recently elected new officers for 2008-09.

· David T. Yohman was elected chairperson. He is an adjunct professor in the administration of justice program at Hagerstown Community College. He also was appointed to a second three-year term on the board.

· Dolores Harmon was elected vice chairperson. She is a regional manager for family child care for the Maryland State Department of Education.

· James I. Blanks was elected secretary. He was the owner and operator of Antietam Equipment Corporation in Hagerstown from 1981 to 1997. He also was appointed to a second three-year term on the board.

· Sheryl L. Goree was appointed to a three-year term on the board. She is employed as an office associate by the Hagerstown Housing Authority since 2004.

D.M. Bowman

WILLIAMSPORT - The following recently joined the staff of D.M. Bowman.

· John Harris was hired as a staff accountant. He previously was employed by Ridgeline and is a 2007 graduate of West Virginia University with a B.S. in business administration.

· Charles Sliger was hired as a driver manager. He is a previous employee of D.M. Bowman and is a graduate of the University of Maryland.

· Hallie Heverely was hired as a customer service assistant. She previously was employed by Easily Managed Corporation.

· Stephen Heath was hired as a driver recruiter. He was a driver recruiter for J.B. Hunt and attended Kent State University.

Callas Contractors

Ron Fritz and Bobby Oliver of Callas Contractors Inc. recently completed a seven-day National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Project Supervisors Academy.

The NCCER offers Construction Management Academies for project managers, project supervisors and safety personnel. The academies are at Clemson (S.C.) University.

AIG/American General

Mike Foster, a sales representative with AIG/American General, was named Employee of the Month for May.

Foster earned the recognition because of his outstanding sales and service performance.

Foster joined AIG/American General in December 1993.


The following employees of Roxbury Correctional Institution recently were recognized.

· Lt. Ronald Dickens was selected as Supervisor of the Quarter.

Dickens has gathered intelligence over the past year that has led to the recovery of numerous major contraband items.

Dickens has been employed with by State of Maryland since 1997.

· Fred Shetter, an office clerk II, was named Employee of the Month.

Shetter received the award for his accuracy, thoroughness and orderliness in performing his work assignments.

Shetter has been employed by the State of Maryland since 2006.


Sgt. Jeffrey Mills has been named Employee of the Month for July at the Maryland Correctional Training Center.

In addition to his regular duties as Officer In Charge of Relief and Escort, Mills has taken on new responsibilities with the lateral duty of security equipment. Mills' computer skills have added to the efficiency of the lateral duty.

Mills has been employed by MCTC since August 1998 and was promoted to sergeant in August 2005.

Penn State Mont Alto

MONT ALTO, Pa. - Francis Achampong, chief academic officer and professor of business law at Penn State Mont Alto, has been awarded a certificate of completion in management and leadership in higher education by the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

One hundred applicants were selected for the competitive program from colleges and universities around the world, including institutions in Australia, Canada, France, Hong Kong, New Zealand and the U.S.

Achampong earned a bachelor of laws degree from the University of Ghana, a master of laws degree from the Georgetown University Law Center and both a master of laws degree and doctorate degree from the University of London.
