Fire call shuts down city block in downtown Hagerstown today

July 18, 2008

The first block of West Washington Street in Hagerstown was shut down at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday after firefighters responded to the smell of smoke in a building at 20 W. Washington St., Battalion Fire Chief Kyd Dietrich said.

Dietrich said firefighters had to shut off the power in an elevator after the odor was traced to a transformer.

No one had to be rescued from the elevator, Dietrich said. Firefighters turned the issue over to maintenance workers in the building.
