Army Spec. Jeremy S. McAfee, son of Chris L. and Lisa L. McAfee of Hagerstown, has been decorated with the Army Achievement Medal for participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom at a forward-deployed location overseas.

The medal is awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces, who while serving in any capacity with the Army in an area authorized by the Secretary of the Army, have distinguished themselves by meritorious service or achievement.

McAfee, a combat engineer with three years of military service, is normally assigned to the 66th Engineer Co., Schofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii.

McAfee graduated in 2003 from South Hagerstown High School.

Air Force Airman Brittany N. Ratcliff, daughter of Jeffrey Ratcliff of Hancock, and Debbie Ratcliff of Wright Ave., Baltimore, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Ratcliff is a 2007 graduate of Hancock Middle-Senior High School.

Navy Seaman Kyle S. Tennant, son of Lynn C. Turner and Kyle S. Tennant of Charles Town, W.Va., was recently selected as the Blue Jacket of the Quarter while serving as an air traffic controller at Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy.

The Blue Jacket of the Quarter program recognizes the best all-around sailor. Tennant's superior performance, leadership by example, knowledge of Navy policies and military bearing, led to his being selected.

Tennant is a 2003 graduate of Jefferson High School in Shenandoah Junction, W.Va.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Andrew J. Salamon, son of Wayne J. Salamon of Frederick, Md., recently completed Naval Nuclear Power Training Pipeline. Upon completion of the course, Salamon qualified as a Naval nuclear operator.

Salamon joined the Navy in August 2006.

Army Pvt. Stuart W. Healey, son of Thayer Healey of Frederick, Md., graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Healey earned distinction as an honor graduate.

Healey is a 2006 graduate of Gov. Thomas Johnson High School in Frederick, Md.

Karen M. McGrane, daughter of Steven L. and Connie J. Allar of Beulah, N.D., graduated from the Uniformed Services University, F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine in Bethesda, Md. The graduate was promoted to the rank of captain and commissioned as a U.S. Army Corps officer.

McGrane's husband, Owen, is the son of Lawrence McGrane, and Julie McGrane, both of Brownsville, Md.

McGrane graduated in 1997 from Beulah High School, and received an associate degree in 2001 from Pierce Community College, Tacoma, Wash. McGrane received a bachelor's degree in 2003 from Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma.

Army Pvt. Manuel H. Aquino, son of Lillian E. Cole of New Market, Md., and nephew of Oscar Zavala of Columbia, Md., has been named the 6th Air Defense Artillery Brigade's Soldier of the Year. Selection was based on the individual's exemplary duty performance, job knowledge, leadership qualities, significant self-improvement, specific achievements, notable accomplishments and community service and support.

Aquino, a motor transport operator, is assigned to the 1st Battalion, 56th Air Defense Artillery, Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas.

Aquino graduated in 2001 from Richard Montgomery High School, Rockville, Md.

Army Pvt. Daisy E. Kuhn, daughter of Basil Kuhn of Hancock, and Alissa Farrow of Hagerstown, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Kuhn is a 2006 graduate of Clear Spring High School.

Army Pvt. Christopher M. Doss, son of Debbie McClelland of Thurmont, Md., graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
