Old Opera House to host free premiere of PBS documentary featuring Charles Town

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - A free public premiere of a PBS television documentary that includes history about Charles Town is to be shown Saturday at the Old Opera House on George Street, according to a news release from the city.

The Road Trip to History documentary will include discussions about local black history, the county's thoroughbred racing industry and an interview with Frank Buckles, a Charles Town-area resident who is the last known surviving American World War I veteran, the release said.

The premiere will be shown at the Old Opera House across from the Jefferson County Courthouse at 3 and 6 p.m., the release said.

The event is being sponsored by American Public University, Charles Town Races & Slots, United Bank, Bank of Charles Town and City Nation Bank.

Mayor Peggy Smith said the city plans to sell DVD copies of the documentary to raise money for heritage tourism programs.

DVDs will be available during the city's Heritage Day Sept. 20, the release said.
