Battle of Funkstown re-enactment called off

FUNKSTOWN - The high price of gasoline has claimed yet another victim. There will be no Battle of Funkstown this year.

The annual event, which was planned for Friday through Sunday, was scrubbed because turnout was nearly "zilch," according to organizer Ron Benedict.

"I heard from three Union groups of re-enactors but no Confederates," Benedict told the Funkstown Mayor and Council at Monday night's meeting.

There were to have been two battles, one in the park and one on the streets of town. In years past, a large number of re-enactors for both sides of the battle turned out.

"Gasoline prices are through the roof," said Benedict, who noted that some re-enactors have lost their jobs, making it hard for them to participate.

The recent re-enactment of the Battle of Gettysburg also was affected by economic woes and the attendance was down by several thousand, Benedict said.

Some hope of postponing the event in Funkstown never really materialized, Benedict said.
