Area roundup -- Funkstown splits with Mount Airy

July 13, 2008

FUNKSTOWN -- Josh Constable settled in after a shaky first inning to lead Funkstown Post 211 to an 8-5 win over Mount Airy in the first game of a Western Maryland District doubleheader on Saturday.

Constable (2-0) issued three walks and allowed four runs in the first before holding Mount Airy in check the rest of the way.

Funkstown scored four runs in the fourth and took the lead in the fifth, sparked by Tyler Presgraves' solo home run. Presgraves and Derek Hendershot each had two hits and two RBIs and Cody Nelling also had two hits for Funkstown.

Mount Airy earned a split, winning the second game, 4-3.

Zeke Ricketts had a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to pull Funkstown within one, but left runners stranded on second and third when the final out was made.

Jay Shafer had two hits and Raymond Rosario homered for Post 211 (16-7, 13-6).

Due to a reporter's error, a story on page B1 of Saturday's Herald-Mail misidentified the leading scorer for the Hagerstown Community College men's soccer team. His name is Tyler McKenrick. The Herald apologizes for the error.

In the same story, an incoming HCC player stated that the team had never been ranked nationally. The Hawks were ranked in the NJCAA Top 20 in 1987.
