Sun Chemical closing Williamsport facility

July 11, 2008

WILLIAMSPORT - The Williamsport-area plant of Sun Chemical, which makes printing ink, is closing this month and transferring production to other plants.

A letter from plant manager Patrice Slodysko says the six local employees were told the facility will close July 25. The employees might be considered for jobs at other Sun Chemical plants or get severance pay based on years of service, her letter says.

She wrote that "escalating raw material costs, a slower U.S. economy and the financial restructuring of major customers are factors that are contributing to a lower than anticipated demand for publication inks this year."

Her letter says the company hasn't decided what it will do with its local facility on Grumbacker Lane in the Interstate Industrial Park.

At its Web site, Sun Chemical, an international company, describes itself as "the world's largest producer of printing inks and pigments" and a provider of materials for various industries.
