Way to go, Amanda

Amanda Martin of Maugansville will join a group of students representing their schools, communities and country as People to People student leaders.

She was accepted into the People to People Leadership Summit at Columbia University in New York. Nomination and acceptance for this honor was based on outstanding scholastic merit, civic involvement and leadership potential.

Amanda will be starting the ninth grade at North Hagerstown High School this fall.

Pig roast set for Saturday

The Broadfording Church of the Brethren Fellowship in Cearfoss is having a pig and corn roast/community music event Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m.


There will be fun activities for children, including a water slide.

The meal will be served at 4 p.m. Tickets cost $8 for adults; $4 for those 5 to 12; and nothing for those 4 and younger.

Music will be provided at 2 p.m. by Bev Mowen-Hann, at 3 p.m. by Hilltop Gospel Boys, at 4 p.m. by Forgiven and at 5 p.m. by Fertile Soil.

Proceeds will benefit the senior high youth ministries of the church. Call 301-791-5432 for more information.

Family picnic

The seventh annual Interfaith Family Picnic will be held at the Maugansville Ruritan Club on Sunday, Aug. 10, from 1 to 4 p.m. This year, participants will enjoy an air-conditioned indoor facility and outdoor games for the kids.

Everyone is welcome to attend. Burgers, hot dogs and drinks will be provided. The food is free, but please bring a hot or cold dish to share.

Firefighters of the month

Maugansville Fire Co. Chief Phil Ridenour named firefighter Donald Saum as firefighter of the month for April; Adam Repp as May's firefighter of the Month and Richard Martorana as June's. The award is presented to the firefighter who attends the most weekly training and responds to the most fire calls in each month.

Garret made sergeant

Firefighter Thomas Garret was recently appointed as sergeant with Maugansville Fire Co. Additionally, Thomas successfully completed the 131-hour Emergency Medical Technician class. Good job, Tommy!

Volunteers sought

The Volunteer Fire Co. in Maugansville is always seeking dedicated individuals who have some time to give. The only pay you receive is the satisfaction of helping a neighbor in need. Stop by, take a tour and talk with the firefighters any time.

Fire company to assist Sprint opening

Maugansville Fire Co. is teaming up with the new Sprint store at the intersection of Maugans and Pennsylvania avenues Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to celebrate the store's grand opening. The fire company will be preparing hamburgers and hot dogs. Stop by and take a look around.

Best wishes to longtime volunteer and career firefighter Dave Baer on his recent retirement from the Hagerstown Fire Department. Enjoy your retirement.

Kids safety event

The fire company is hosting a kids safety event at the end of July. Stay tuned for more information and plan to attend.

Fundraiser for Humane Society

The Washington Country Humane Society will hold its 'Rockin' Four Paws' money bonanza on Aug. 2 at the Hagerstown Elks Lodge on Robinwood Drive. The bonanza is to raise funds for the shelter's operation.

Tickets cost $50, which admits two people and includes a meal, certain drinks and more. Top prize is $2,500 with many lesser prizes. Tip Jars and raffles and more will be available. Following the drawing at 8 p.m. The Holders will play 1950s, 60s and 70s rock 'n' roll music until midnight. Doors open at 2:30 p.m., the bar opens at 3 p.m., dinner will be served at 5 p.m., the drawing is at 6 p.m., and the dance will start at 8 p.m. Get your tickets early; only 299 will be sold. Twins born

Congratulations goes out to volunteers Mike and Christina Alderton on the birth of twin girls. Larissa weighed in at 7 pounds, 7 ounces and Leyla at 7 pounds, 5 ounces.


Jamal Gipson is celebrating his 16th birthday on July 16.
