Grand jury exonerates Frederick deputies who killed knife-wielding man

July 11, 2008

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A Frederick County grand jury has exonerated three deputies who fatally shot a knife-wielding man last month.

State's Attorney J. Charles Smith says the panel ruled that the use of force was justified and that no criminal charges are warranted.

Thirty-nine-year-old Don Steven Garrett was shot 10 times outside his home in the Wellington Trace apartment complex near Frederick on June 9.

The sheriff's office says Garrett lunged at the deputies with a knife after agreeing to leave the building peacefully following a 2 1/2-hour standoff.
