Salute to Independence

July 06, 2008

Mother Nature cooperated just long enough Saturday during the daylong Salute to Independence at Antietam National Battlefield.

Thousands of people jammed the battlefield to celebrate America's 232nd birthday with picnics, fun, a performance by the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and fireworks.

A thunderstorm struck the Hagerstown area earlier Saturday night, but heavy rain stayed away from the battlefield until the fireworks show ended.
