Jackie W. Poffenberger, 67

LITTLE ORLEANS, Md. - Jackie W. "Puffy" Poffenberger, 67, of Old Adams Road, died Friday, July 4, 2008, at his home.

Born Dec. 20, 1940, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late John William and Ada Eleanor Davis Poffenberger.

He had been employed as a mechanic by Rapid Lube in Hagerstown.

He is survived by his wife, Rita L. Wandless Poffenberger, whom he married Aug. 2, 1996; three daughters, Loretta Swick of Buffalo Mills, Pa., Judy Landis of Cumberland, Md., and Ashley Poffenberger of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; three sons, John Poffenberger of Houstontown, Pa., and Jack Poffenberger II and Austin Poffenberger, both of Little Orleans; two sisters, Lorraine Miller of LaVale, Md., and Loretta Shaffer of Rochester, N.Y.; and nine grandchildren.


Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home in Hancock. The Rev. Jay Schultz will officiate. Burial will be in Mahnes Chapel Cemetery in Berkeley Springs.

The family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to help defray funeral expenses to Rita L. Poffenberger, 31737 Old Adams Road, Little Orleans, MD 21766.

Thomas E. Nuse, 79

BRUNSWICK, Md. - Thomas Eldridge Nuse, 79, of Brunswick, died Thursday, July 3, 2008, at Washington Hospital Center.

Born June 4, 1929, in Knoxville, Md., he was the son of the late Harry Thomas Nuse and Carrie Mae Dermer Nuse.

He retired as a clerk from the B&O Railroad in Brunswick after 44 years of service.

He was an Episcopalian.

He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1136 of Brunswick and the B&O Veterans Association.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Wanda N. Nuse; one daughter, Cathey Dawson of Brunswick; three sons, Harry C. Nuse and Tommy Nuse, both of Brunswick, and Kevin Nuse of Alexandria, Va.; one sister, Mary Olden of Frederick, Md.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy M. Russell; and one brother, Harry Nuse.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church in Brunswick. The Rev. Mark Lewis will officiate. Burial will be in Park Heights Cemetery in Brunswick.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at John T. Williams Funeral Home in Brunswick.

Jewel F. Bender, 101

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Jewel Frances Hiett Bender, 101, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, July 5, 2008, at her daughter's home.

Born Nov. 23, 1906, in Levels, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Samuel Marion Hiett and Lillie Florence Power Hiett.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Clarence Luther Bender.

She retired as a teacher from Berkeley County (W.Va.) Schools.

She was a member of Martinsburg Primitive Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Barbara J. Fulton of Hagerstown; one son, Terry L. Bender of Martinsburg; three grandchildren, Ashley Fulton of Hagerstown, Cindy Smith of Hedgesville, W.Va. and Brenda Moore of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Violet M. Hiett and Pauline L. Jackson; and two brothers, Albert D. Hiett and Chester B. Hiett.

Graveside services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Rosedale Cemetery in Martinsburg. Elder John Nichols and Elder Gary Utz will officiate.

Mrs. Olive (Gilbert) Irwin, 79

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Mrs. Olive (Gilbert) Irwin, 79, a resident of Menno Village, Chambersburg, Pa. and formerly of 386 Wayburn St., Greencastle, Pa., died at 9 p.m. Friday, July 4, 2008, at Menno Village.

Born on the family farm near Lurgan, Northern Ireland, on April 6, 1929, she was the daughter of the late James and Jean (Martin) Gilbert.

Olive earned a BA in languages from Queens University, Belfast, Northern Ireland. She taught French, German and Latin in high schools in Northern Ireland, Vienna, Austria, and, prior to her marriage, in New Jersey.

She and her husband, Jack L. Irwin, were married in Ireland in July of 1957. They lived on Long Beach Island, N.J., from 1958 until 1995 when they moved to Pennsylvania. Olive met Jack, a native of Kansas, when she visited the United States as part of the International Farm Youth Exchange program.
