Coroner says heart condition caused death

July 04, 2008

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - A man whose truck crashed and burned on Interstate 81 on Wednesday died of a heart condition, Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner said in a press release on Thursday.

The release listed "acute cardiac event" as the cause of death for Howard P. Witmer, 68, of Hagerstown.

Witmer was driving south when his 1990 GMC pickup truck went off the road near exit 5 and hit a bridge abutment, police said Wednesday. The truck burst into flames.

"This was a natural death that resulted in a traffic accident (and) NOT a death as a result of the accident," Conner's news release says.
