The Maryland Symphony Orchestra will celebrate America's birthday Saturday in its 23rd Annual Salute to Independence at Antietam National Battlefield.

This year's concert will feature musicians with connections to the region and the orchestra, MSO Music Director Elizabeth Schulze has said.

The concert is to begin at 7:30 p.m. with mezzo soprano Susanne Mentzer, who has been a guest soloist with the MSO, performing "The Star-Spangled Banner." The concert is to conclude with Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture," with live cannon fire.

Fireworks are scheduled to begin after the concert, at about 9:45 p.m.

Admission is free. Any donations go toward the cost of the concert.

There is no rain date.
