Cooling Scarves project to help troops fight heat

July 02, 2008

The Washington County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has a project to help servicemen and women stationed overseas.

The chapter will match up to $1,400 donations received from all Lutheran congregations to purchase/make "Cooling Scarves" for the troops. The cost of each scarf is $14.

Donations can be made to any Lutheran congregation in Washington County by contacting the Thrivent coordinators at each church, or contacting the Thrivent office in Hagerstown at 240-420-1977.

All donations received will be used to purchase the materials for the scarves or the scarves from Soldiers Angels, an organization that is dedicated to helping the troops.

Description: The exterior of the Cooling Scarves is 100 percent cotton, but the magic is in the special "cooling crystals." These scarves lower body temperature by cooling the neck - they feel like a cool, damp cloth that lasts for days. By producing an evaporative cooling sensation, they protect the wearer from the effects of the extreme heat found in the deserts of the Middle East.

The scarves:

· Stay cool two to three days, without refrigeration (must be adjusted periodically to maximize cooling effect)

· Reduce the risk of heat stroke

· Reusable

If you would like to help, contact the Thrivent coordinator at 301-733-8741 or 240-420-1977. Any church denomination is welcome to come help.
