Russel W. Furst, 86

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Russel W. Furst, 86, of 1025 Marvern Drive, died Sunday, June 29, 2008, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Nov. 12, 1921, in Staunton, Va., he was the son of the late Russel C. and Helen Weest Furst.

He was a 1941 graduate of Altoona High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy, retiring as a chief yeoman in 1968.

He then worked as a food stamp administrator with the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare, retiring in 1983.

He was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Williamson, Pa.

He also was a member of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 and BPO Elks Lodge 600, both in Chambersburg.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Iverson Furst, whom he married Jan. 10, 1953; one son, David Furst of Ellicott City, Md.; one brother, Harry W. Furst of Middletown, Pa.; and two grandchildren.


Private graveside services will be at Lincoln Cemetery, with military honors by VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Carolyn J. Lee, 58

Carolyn Jean Lee, 58, of 11526 French Lane, Hagerstown, died Monday, June 30, 2008, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Nov. 13, 1949, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Charles Russell Higgins Sr. and Rita Delores West Higgins.

She was employed with Hoffman's Quality Meats of Hagerstown until her illness.

She is survived by two sons, Steven L. Shoemaker of Hagerstown and Brian K. Shoemaker of Greencastle, Pa.; one sister, Patricia A. Stum of Martinsburg, W.Va.; five brothers, John F. Higgins and Terry West, both of Hagerstown, Jeffrey A. Higgins of Maugansville, Calvin W. Higgins of Funkstown and Dennis Higgins of Boonsboro; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; aunts; and uncles.

She was preceded in death by one son, Gregory L. Shoemaker, and one brother, Charles R. Higgins.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Mount Calvary Church of God, Clear Spring. The Rev. Robert Shatzer will officiate. Burial will be in Parkhead Cemetery, Big Pool.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home Inc., Clear Spring.

Liane D. Burget, 65

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Liane D. Burget, 65, of 56 N. Main Street, Apt. 1, was found dead Thursday, June 26, 2008, near Greenvillage, Pa.

Born Dec. 22, 1942, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of Lynn S. Elliott Sr. of St. Thomas, Pa., and the late Jennie Gardner Elliott.

She was a 1960 graduate of St. Thomas High School.

She was employed at the former Stanley Co. in Chambersburg.

In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband, Kriston R. "Kris" Burget, whom she married March 20, 1988; two daughters, Bridget Y. Sisk of Cockeysville, Md., and Michelle V. Burget of Greenvillage; two sons, Charles K. Helmuth Jr. of Chambersburg and Jeremy K. Miller of Lewistown, Pa.; three sisters, Dorinda Andrews of Shippensburg, Pa., Tina Kaylor of Elizabethtown, Pa., and Robin Rizer of Chambersburg; three brothers, Lynn S. Elliott Jr. and Brad Hepfer, both of Chambersburg, and John Hepfer Jr. of Lower Horse Valley, Pa.; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; nieces; and nephews.

Services will be at the convenience of the family.

Milton R. Moats Jr., 75

FAIRFIELD, Calif. - Milton R. "Pop" Moats Jr., 75, of Fairfield, died Wednesday, June 25, 2008, in Fairfield.

Born Feb. 1, 1933, in Downsville, Md., he was the son of the late Milton R. Moats Sr. and Pearl Higgins Moats.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Ona Mae Bottoms Moats.

He worked for Clarence Hagerman, Beasley Plumbing. He was a member of Laborers Union Local 326.

He was a four-year U.S. Air Force veteran.

He is survived by daughters, Sandra Capp, Shelba Lancaster, and Cheryl Levesque; sons, Milton R. Moats III, David L. Harrison and Chris Harrison; sisters, Jeannie Gehr of Clear Spring, Gladys Calandrell of Hagerstown and Goldie Brown of Williamsport; eight grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Bobbie Roach, Bettie Shupp and Garnetta Lockard, and brother, Paul Moats.

Viewing and services were held Sunday, June 29, and Monday, June 30, in Fairfield.

A local memorial service will be held at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, Hagerstown, on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Pastors Larry Aikens and Bobby Robinson will officiate.

Betty K. Baker, 71

GERRARDSTOWN, W.Va. - Betty Katherine Martin Baker, 71, of Gerrardstown, died Sunday, June 29, 2008, at Ruxton Health Care of Winchester, Va.

Born March 16, 1937, in Hampshire Co., W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Hubert G. and Minnie McBride Martin.
