THURMONT, Md. - Jay Shafer had five hits and drove in seven runs as Funkstown Post 211 rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Thurmont on Sunday.

Shafer and Raymond Rosario each hit two-run doubles in a five-run fifth inning as Funkstown pulled away for a 12-1 win in the opener. Shafer finished with two hits and three RBIs.

Marcellus Sumlin went 4-for-5 with five RBIs, including a two-run home run in the sixth, while Rosario added two hits and three RBIs for Funkstown. Jeremy Barron had two RBIs and Josh Constable added two hits.

Brandon Knight pitched a complete game, striking out eight while allowing three hits and three walks.

Shafer added three hits and drove in four runs in a 12-4 victory in the nightcap. Tyler Presgraves set the tone for Funkstown with a solo homer in the first.


Funkstown had four runs in the fourth - keyed by Shafer's two-run single and an RBI double by Zeke Ricketts - and a five-run sixth ignited by Cody Nelling's two-run double.

Ricketts finished with three hits and two RBIs for Funkstown (11-4, 8-3 Western Maryland District), while Presgraves had two hits and two RBIs and Barron had two hits and an RBI. Derrick Hendershot had three hits and Constable added two hits.

Williamsport Nationals 12-5, Brunswick 10-1

WILLIAMSPORT - Jake Pendergraft hit a two-run home run in Saturday's first game of the Nationals' doubleheader sweep.

BOONSBORO - Josh Wiles, Craig Walling and Will Black each hit a double, and Valley took advantage of several walks to defeat South Mountain.

Andy Sigler and Andrew Webber each homered, while Jeremy Hardy, Matt Webber and Nick Lum each had two hits for South Mountain.

Valley will host Hancock this afternoon at 5:30.

CLEAR SPRING - Hancock earned the victory when Clear Spring was forced to forfeit in the sixth inning Sunday because it was unable to field enough players to finish the game.

South Mountain 13, Conococheague 0

WILLIAMSPORT - Matt Crisci had three hits, including a grand slam and a double, and finished with five RBIs in South Mountain's losers' bracket victory Saturday over Conococheague.

Tanner Johnson and Devin Griffith had two hits each, while Spencer Griffin pitched a complete-game shutout for South Mountain, which will travel to Clear Spring today at 6 p.m.

Rice sets county record

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Boonsboro's Scott Rice set a Washington County boys record by clearing 14 feet, 3 1/4 inches Sunday at the USATF Youth Junior Olympic Nationals.

Rice finished sixth overall. He previously shared the record with North Hagerstown graduate David Miller at 14 feet.


Ruff takes second in age group

MIFFLINBURG, Pa. - Hagerstown's Dave Ruff finished second in the men's 55-plus age group in the Xterra Off Road Triathlon, featuring a half-mile mile open water swim, 11 1/2-mile mountain bike section and a 4-mile trail run.

Pete O'Boyle, Lauren O'Boyle and Addie Hardinge, all of Hagerstown, finished second in the relay division. Hardinge did the swimming, Pete O'Boyle the biking and Lauren O'Boyle the running.


Fountain Head Two-Person tourney

Dave Birkhauser and Kory Tucker combined to shoot a 4-under-par 67 to win the first gross division in the Two-Person Team Championship at Fountain Head Country Club.

Phil Carrasco and Scott Toms combined for a 61 for first net honors.

In the women's first gross, Brigie Greenwald and Carol VanReenan carded an 88 for the win. Pam Tetlow and Elaine Morris shot a 68 for 1st net honors.
