A motorcycle rider who was run over by a tractor-trailer Wednesday on Halfway Boulevard was in critical condition Thursday night at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, a hospital spokesperson said.
Jeffrey Alan Vilkas, 26, of Hagerstown, was riding west on Halfway Boulevard on a motorcycle at about 6:48 p.m. when a tractor-trailer also headed west on Halfway Boulevard attempted to change lanes and struck the motorcycle, police said. The accident happened just west of the ramp from southbound I-81, police said.
As the motorcycle struck the ground, the rear axles of the truck ran over both the motorcycle and Vilkas, according to the release.
Vilkas was taken to Washington County Hospital, then airlifted to Baltimore, police said.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, whose name was not released, was charged with citations that including negligent driving, police said.
