Hagerstown Community College to offer pharmacy tech course

Hagerstown Community College has been approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission to offer a pharmacy technician certificate program beginning this fall.

The 26-credit program is designed to prepare students to work as pharmacy technicians in retail and institutional health-care settings. It includes hands-on laboratory experience in counting, labeling, compounding of medications, sterile technique and IV preparations, infection control, best practices of dispensing medications and the safe handling of medications. Completion of the program will prepare students to sit for the National Pharmacy Technician Certification (NPTC) examination.

Pharmacy technician classes offered at HCC for the fall semester include Intro to Pharmacy Technology (PHR-101), which is offered on Mondays and Wednesday from 6 to 7:45 p.m.; Pharmaceutical Calculation (PHR-102), which is offered on Tuesdays from 6 to 7:45 p.m.; and Pharmacy Lab I (PHR-103), which is offered on Tuesdays from 8 to 8:45 p.m. Each class runs from Aug. 25 through Dec. 10.
