MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A 37-year-old Martinsburg man allegedly told police he was tired of paying so much for marijuana so he began growing his own at his home, according to a city police department news release.

The Martinsburg Police Department on Tuesday seized 18 plants from the South High Street home of Lance Wade Cole Jr. after arriving to investigate a complaint, according to the news release.

Cole was charged with manufacturing a controlled substance. He was arraigned in magistrate court and a $25,000 bond was set.

Martinsburg Police Department Patrolman D.L. English and Cpl. J.E. Darby found nine plants in the backyard of Cole's home at 126 S. High St. and nine more in the basement.

Police said Cole told them he was growing the plants for personal use.
