Mail Call

June 26, 2008

"I would like to speak in defense of Kelly Cromer. I, too, turned in some employees for illegal shenanigans, and suffered the same type of harassment, in and out of the office. These people who have extra perks don't want anyone messing with their honey pot. I admire you, Kelly. Good girl."

- Hagerstown

"As the gas prices rise, I am noticing more and more mopeds and scooters. These vehicles are riding the same streets as my car, but they do not need to be licensed. Why is this? If a moped is riding in front of me in the middle of the road going 20 mph, why is he not made to pay the same fees to operate his vehicle as I am mine? Also, why do motorcycles require a helmet but these guys on these scooters zipping in out and of traffic do not? Something wrong here, don't you think?"

"When did our elected officials stop representing us and start representing themselves? The majority of people in this country want us to drill for oil, to save our children from depending on foreign oil, and some members of Congress say no. They also raise taxes without our permission."

"Seventy years ago, 'experts' warned us of the coming Ice Age. NASA's 'leading global warming expert,' Dr. Jim Hansen, warned us 20 years ago that we only had a decade to counteract global warming. Now, 20 years later, he warns us again: 'This is the last chance.'"

- Martinsburg, W.Va.

"I've been a longtime correctional officer, and I watched with interest about the North Branch opening up there at Cumberland, on the local news. And what I think is laughable is all our state institutions have these security measures. The biggest problem is the administration and the supervisors letting the officers enforce the rules. These security measures don't mean squat unless you enforce the rules."

- Hagerstown

"I just bought a scooter here this weekend, to save money on gas. I just wonder if there's any other people out there riding scooters that would like to see maybe stores accommodate the parking for scooters. It doesn't seem like there's anywhere to really - you always have to lock them up, and there's no real place to be locked up or parked and whatever, and I wonder if anybody else has got the same problems or ideas, or solutions, even."

- Williamsport

"I'm calling to thank the wonderful people who stole our catalytic converter off our pickup, at the 66 exchange there off of I-70, at the Park and Ride. You got a measly little amount for that, but anybody who accepts that, the junkyards or the dealers, should be charged as a felony. Thank you. It got you maybe $175, max, but it's gonna cost us a little over five, six hundred dollars to repair it."

- Cascade

"I don't think the American people are stupid. If a company has made more profit than ever in the whole history of the world, they are charging too much for their products. Why don't these gas stations understand that, oil companies understand that?"

- Hagerstown

"I have a solution on how to relieve some of the pain at the pump. All future vehicles would have a gas tank capacity of five gallons."

- Sykesville, Md.

"Regards to the Kelly Cromer incident, I believe that if people read the facts in the paper rather than listen to the media, they would realize that Kelly Cromer was asking the police officer 'Do you know me?' because she had lost her driver's license or registration, and she was asking the officer if he knew her, just for identification purposes. This has all gotten blown out, way out of proportion."

- Maugansville

"With reference to Verizon's recent claim that the release of information about unlisted telephone subscribers was a 'computer error,' please note that computers do not make errors. Verizon employees using computers (made the errors)."

- Cascade

"It totally blows my mind that someone so lacking in experience and achievement as Barack Obama is seriously running for the most important office in our land. What thoughtful, innovative solutions is he offering to our many problems? More taxes, more government control, the return to influence of many tired, old political has-beens (and a potential for some frightening new ones)? Does this represent the best?"

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling about I bought a Hallmark birthday card that's - found out it's made in China. Ain't nothing made in the U.S. anymore?"

- Maugansville

"I'd like to know why the Democratic Congress isn't doing anything about the president's proposal to lower gas prices."

"Back in the late '40s when I was planning my wedding, I went to my doctor to find out how to delay having children until we were settled and had good health insurance. He gave me advice, and it worked. We had two children, and no more. Children are a big responsibility. Conception is very simple: A plus B equals C (that stands for 'child')."

- Hagerstown

"Isn't it amazing that days after George Bush calls to take the mandates off the drilling, that Saudi Arabia decides to start pumping more oil? This is leadership we've been needing for a long time. I think Congress needs to get on the ball now, and before this winter."

- Williamsport

"Concerning the Kelly Cromer episode: Before it occurred, we didn't know who you are, but thanks to you, we now know who you are and what you are."

- Hagerstown

"In regard to the incident in which nonpublished numbers were printed in an independent phone directory, I have to say Verizon took responsibility right away - unlike Allegheny Power in the light bulb incident. There is another party that should take some responsibility, and that is The Herald-Mail. If The Herald-Mail had not put that story on the front page of its paper, probably only a hundred people would have known about the mistake, instead of thousands."
