Inwood, W.Va., man killed in crash near Martinsburg

June 25, 2008|By MATTHEW UMSTEAD

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A 51-year-old Berkeley County man died Tuesday after a two-vehicle accident on Apple Harvest Drive (W.Va. 45) southwest of Martinsburg, police said.

Michael Lynwood Medler, of Inwood, W.Va., was pronounced dead at City Hospital in Martinsburg at 7:24 p.m., according to West Virginia State Police Trooper J.D. Burkhart, who was investigating the accident.

The apparent cause of Medler's death was multiple blunt force trauma, Burkhart said.

Medler did not appear to be restrained in the green 1979 MG convertible he was driving east on the two-lane road when he "T-boned" a gold Dodge Dakota pickup driven by Leslie Shetler of Winchester, Va., according to information Burkhart said he received from individuals first to arrive at the scene.

The accident was dispatched at 6:24 p.m.

Shetler, 43, was taken to City Hospital to be treated for what appeared to be nonlife-threatening injuries.

Shetler was turning left into a family member's driveway when the convertible appeared to attempt to pass, but then braked and slid into the truck in the westbound lane of Apple Harvest Drive, Burkhart said. The vehicles then slid off the road.

Joining Burkhart in responding to the accident scene were members of the South Berkeley Volunteer Fire Co., the Berkeley County Ambulance Authority and State Police troopers D.S. See and P. North. Medical examiner Donald Shirley assisted police at City Hospital.
