MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - An 18-year-old man was in Eastern Regional Jail on Monday evening after police said he disfigured his pregnant girlfriend in an attack on Saturday at a Martinsburg motel room, according to Berkeley County Magistrate Court records.

Jamie Kyle Vanorsdale, of 5 Big Park Road in Hedgesville, W.Va., is charged with malicious wounding, according to court records.

Magistrate Sandra L. Miller set a $20,000 cash bond for Vanorsdale in an arraignment hearing Saturday.

Berkeley County Sheriff's Department deputies who responded to the Relax Inn at 1022 Winchester Ave. saw a woman whose face was "very swollen and disfigured," according to a complaint by Deputy M.T. Hudson. The woman had bruises on her arms and throat, Hudson noted.

Police were told the assault happened after the couple began arguing and the woman's initial attempt to escape was foiled by the defendant, according to Hudson.

The woman told police she was seven months pregnant and that the defendant kicked her in the back, ribs and stomach before he gave her ice and left the room.

Hudson said he later learned that Vanorsdale was out on bond on a charge of domestic battery.
