Hagerstown Lioness Club

The Hagerstown Lioness Club will meet Thursday, July 3, at Cortland Mansion, 19411 Cortland Drive, Hagerstown. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Deputy Dan Watson of the Washington County Sheriff's Department. His topic will be "Crime Prevention."

Youth mission trip

Four members of the Foundation Student Ministries youth group at the Good Shepherd Ministries went on a mission trip to Brenton, W.Va., to work with the Appalachian Service Project from June 7 to 14.

On the trip. they were to assist in renovating and building houses for residents of the Brenton area. The student members included Austin Askins, Lauren Jacobson, Hannah Wylie and Ryan Seiler. Adult leaders included Youth Pastor Jeff Casto, Allen Jacobson and Britt Miller, all members of Good Shepherd Ministries. Good Shepherd Ministries is on the corner of Leitersburg Pike and Longmeadow Road.


Elsie Horst led the June 16 TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 77 program. She selected a portion from "The Choice Is Mine" book about what food labels tell us. It states, "the more nutrients, the more beneficial."

Trudy Heather was the "Get-R-Done" contest winner this week. She lost 4 1/2 pounds. Great job! We welcomed a new member, Joan, to the chapter. The group also was very happy to congratulate Joan Budny on becoming a KOPS (Keep off Pounds Sensibly.) Joan has worked hard on reaching her goal weight. The group has several members who are close to reaching their goals.

TOPS 446

The TOPS (Take off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 446 members each received a local, fresh picked, first-of-the-season tomato at the June 18 meeting.

The group was then given information about this special fruit.

The group plans to hear about "One Pound at a Time" at the next meeting.

St. Maria Goretti news

Richard Fairley has been named the new principal at St. Maria Goretti High School, starting July 1.    

A used uniform sale will be held at Goretti on July 7-10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.        

A new uniform sale by Flynn O'Hara will be Tuesday, July 15, from noon to 6 p,m. 

The administration, faculty and staff would like to say "congratulations and best wishes" to the Class of 2008 as they begin their new adventures.

Security 1st

The Security 1st Neighborhood group will hold its last meeting before breaking for the summer.

The meeting will be Wednesday at Washington Gardens in the community room from 6 to 7 p.m.

Student wins award

Katie Cronise, entering the 12th grade, was given the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute medal award for outstanding academic achievement in the study of math and sciences.

If accepted at Rensselaer, she would receive a $15,000 per year scholarship for four years. Katie was the 2008 Goretti outstanding junior math student. Katie is the daughter of Paul and Linda Cronise, and the granddaughter of Paul and Ingrid Cronise and Bill and Sharon Simms.
