Samuel W. Carter, 59



JULY 16, 1948-JUNE 20, 2008

Samuel William Carter, 59, of Hagerstown, died Friday, June 20, 2008, at Washington County Hospital.

Born July 16, 1948, in Bethesda, Md., he was the son of the late Ezra and Myrtle Virginia Carter.

He was a hot walker at the Charles Town Race Track.

He was a member of Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association.

He is survived by his wife, Jan Leslie Cohen Carter; one son, Jeffery S. S. Carter; three sisters, Elizabeth Harding of Germantown, Md., Diane Munzer of Kearneysville, W.Va., and Anna M. Kisner of Rockville, Md.; one brother, Clarence Boswell of Gaithersburg, Md.; stepchildren; nieces; and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty C. Boswell; and one brother, Clarence Carter.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home in Ranson, W.Va. Chaplain Rick Mann will officiate.

Burial will be in Darnestown Presbyterian Church Cemetery at a later date.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.




C. Robert Kershner, 72



SEPT. 11, 1935-JUNE 20, 2008

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - C. Robert Kershner, 72, of Charles Town, died Friday, June 20, 2008, at his home.

Born Sept. 11, 1935, in Charles Town, he was the son of the late Claude R. Kershner Sr. and Kathryn McGinnis Kershner.

He was a 1953 graduate of Charles Town High School and a 1960 graduate of Shepherd College.

He was employed as a supervisor by The Department of Human Services, retiring in 1988.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He received the Good Conduct Medal.

He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Uvilla, W.Va.

He was a teacher, and a basketball and football coach at Charles Town Junior High School.

He was a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joan Siler Kershner; two sons, Craig O. Kershner of Charles Town and Stephen R. Kershner of Martinsburg, W.Va.; one sister, Kathryn K. Jenkins of Middletown, Md.; seven grandchildren; one aunt; one uncle; one nephew; and cousins.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church in Uvilla. The Rev. Fred A. Soltow Jr. and Pastor Richard E. Neal will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery in Charles Town.

The family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town.

Charley W. Kunkle Jr., 91



JULY 8, 1916-JUNE 17, 2008

Charley Wright Kunkle Jr., 91, of Hagerstown, died Tuesday, June 17, 2008, at Fahrney Keedy Nursing Home in Boonsboro.

Born July 8, 1916, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of the late Charley Wright Kunkle Sr. and Anna Uglow Kunkle.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Josephine Virginia Keller Kunkle, in 1973; and his second wife, Mary Doris Stevens Kunkle, in 1993.

He was a machinist at the Frick Co. in Waynesboro.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of VFW Post 1936 of Hagerstown, Dixon Troxell American Legion Post 211 of Funkstown, Western Maryland Sportsman Club of Hagerstown, and North American Rod and Gun Club of Hagerstown.

He is survived by one sister, Charlotte Vick of Hagerstown; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald L. Kunkle; one brother, Jack Kunkle; and two sisters, Louise McCallum and Irene Stover.

Services were private. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown, with military honors by AMVETS Post 10 of Hagerstown. The Rev. Richard B. Haberkorn officiated.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Edward D. Householder, 76

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Edward Daniel Householder, 76, of Hedgesville, died Friday, June 20, 2008, at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center.

Born June 18, 1932, in Morgan County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Jacob Daniel Householder and Clara Bowers Householder.

He retired from Corning Glass Co.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Snyder's Bible Chapel.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Wanda Fay DeHaven Householder; one daughter, Regina Sherman of Martinsburg, W.Va.; one son, Daniel Householder of Martinsburg; one brother, Roger V. Householder of Martinsburg; four grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Snyder's Bible Chapel. Pastor Donald Dick will officiate. Military graveside services will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg and Tuesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.
