Ashway's arm, Adams' bat carried clubs

June 21, 2008|By DAN KAUFFMAN

Waynesboro junior Taryn Ashway is no stranger to success -- the Maidens' ace earned Herald-Mail All-Area First Team honors as a freshman and sophomore.

It all was just a prelude to this season, when Ashway and the Maidens soared to new heights.

Ashway -- the 2008 Herald-Mail Softball Pitcher of the Year -- started every game and went 23-4, with a 0.50 ERA, allowing 80 hits and 46 walks while striking out 353 in 192 2/3 innings. She set school records for wins, strikeouts and shutouts (14).

Waynesboro set a school record for most victories in a season and reached the PIAA District 3-AAAA final for the first time, earning a berth to the state tournament.

"This year was just awesome," Ashway said. "We had a really great season, we took it one game at a time and I'm really proud of what we accomplished."

"She really wants to do well and she's just had, really, a phenomenal year," Maidens coach Doug Stuart said. "She's a pretty special girl. This is her third year as a starter and she's always taken the ball. You ask her if she's ready and she always is. She never complains, even when she got a little injury with her leg, she still was a warrior and she wanted the ball."

Ashway helped herself by hitting .311 with six homers and 21 walks.

* Musselman junior third baseman Kaila Adams is the 2008 Herald-Mail Softball Hitter of the Year, batting .505 (48-for-95) with eight doubles, seven homers and 30 RBIs. She earned herself her second straight spot on the All-Area First Team.

"She's a line-drive hitter," Applemen coach Rick Kees said. "She hits the ball hard every time, and most of her home runs have been the line-drive variety. They're not a Barry Bonds-type of hit, but she hits the ball hard. She does a nice job going to all fields from right-center to left-center."

Adams battled through a back injury suffered during basketball season to put her stamp on the Applemen's run to the West Virginia Class AAA Region II title -- upsetting Hedgesville in the process -- and a trip to the state tournament.

"I just wanted to get my back stronger come out and hit like I did last year," Adams said. "That (regional) game is always huge. Last year we lost to (Hedgesville) three times in the regular season and this year we lost to them twice. We were tired of losing to them. We always do well in regionals against them, and they're our rival, which makes us want to beat them more."
