Suns open 2nd half with win over 'Birds

SALISBURY, Md. - Colten Willems pitched 8 2/3 innings and gave up just an unearned run in the ninth inning as Hagerstown opened the South Atlantic League's second half with a 7-1 victory over Delmarva on Thursday.

Willems (5-4) walked one and struck out five.

Michael Burgess led off the second inning with his 15th home run of the year for the Suns, matching the league league for dingers.

Boomer Whiting hit a three-run shot later in the inning for a 4-0 Suns lead.

Burgess' RBI single scored Stephen King - who earlier singled - to make it 5-0 in the third.

Mark Gildea hit a bunt single to lead off the fourth. Whiting walked before Daniel Lyons' single scored Gildea for a 6-0 lead and sent Whiting to third. King's RBI groundout scored Whiting for the final Suns run.
