Waynesboro OKs $47,500 for school resource officer

June 20, 2008|By JENNIFER FITCH

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Waynesboro has been approved for about $47,500 toward the launch of a school resource officer program in 2008-09.

The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency announced $45 million worth of grants this week. Among the announcements was funding for the new position supported in recent months by majority votes from both the Waynesboro Area School Board and Waynesboro Borough Council.

Officer Travis Carbaugh, who already is certified in DARE (Drug Resistance Abuse Education), primarily will work in the middle and high schools, Police Chief Mark King said.

"He will occasionally be in the Summitview Elementary and Fairview Elementary schools," King said.

The three-year grant program will require a percentage of matching local contributions for administration and the officer's salary.
