Charles H. Hughes, 75



NOV. 4, 1932-JUNE 17, 2008

NEEDMORE, Pa. - Charles Harold Hughes, 75, of Needmore, died Tuesday, June 17, 2008, at Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital.

Born Nov. 4, 1932, in Silver Spring, Md., he was the son of the late Harold and Mildred Zinn Hughes.

He was employed by Sears as a television technician.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Viola Bickerton Hughes, whom he married June 15, 1957; two sons, Michael L. Hughes of Needmore, and Vincent P. Hughes of McConnellsburg, Pa.; one brother, Roger L. Hughes of Sebring, Fla.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Laurel Ridge Christian Church, Big Cove Tannery, Pa.

Visitation will be Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.

Arrangements are by Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Homes, McConnellsburg.




Mae E. Manspeaker, 84

Mae Emma Manspeaker, 84, of Hagerstown, died Wednesday, June 18, 2008, at the Golden Living Center in Hagerstown.

Born Jan. 14, 1924, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Slick and Vada E. Moats Slick Ridenour.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Manspeaker.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by two daughters, Diane M. Whitson of Greencastle, Pa., and Jean Law of Maugansville; one son, Donald L. Slick of Falling Waters, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward Slick and Leroy Slick.

Private graveside services will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.

Arrangements are by Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, Hagerstown.




Helen E. Hoch, 86

LEMASTERS, Pa. - Helen E. Miller Hoch, 86, formerly of Lemasters, died Tuesday, June 17, 2008, at The Village of Laurel Run in Fayetteville, Pa.

Born July 31, 1921, in Johnstown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Brady E. Miller and Ruth Miller Miller Skrabut and the stepdaughter of the late Francis Skrabut.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Lemasters United Methodist Church.

She was a former member of Women of the Moose of Mercersburg, Pa.

She is survived by her husband, Edward L. Hoch Sr. of The Village of Laurel Run, whom she married Jan. 9, 1943; one daughter, Barbara Hoch of Carlisle, Pa.; one son, Edward L. Hoch Jr. of Lemasters; two granddaughters; and two great-granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Ellis B. Miller; and one grandson.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, Mercersburg. The Rev. Grant Brouse will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.

Visitation will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.




Vera R. Fritz, 71



JUNE 28, 1936-JUNE 17, 2008

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Vera R. Fritz, 71, of Dickeys Road, died Tuesday, June 17, 2008, at Falling Spring Nursing Center in Chambersburg, Pa.

Born June 28, 1936, in Fort Loudon, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John F. and Grace Zeis Briggs.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph S. Fritz, in 1983.

She had been employed by area orchards in Mercersburg.

She had attended Clayton Memorial Church of God in Mercersburg.

She is survived by her companion, W. Lloyd Gordon of Mercersburg; one sister, Sue Pittman of Lemasters, Pa.; four brothers, John Briggs of Greencastle, Pa., Guy Briggs and Larry Briggs, both of Mercersburg, and Barry Briggs of McConnellsburg, Pa.; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith Spangler and Betty Oliver.

Services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, Mercersburg. Pastor Aletha L. Painter will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

Visitation will be Friday from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.




Ralph J. Strike, 85



JAN. 16, 1923-JUNE 18, 2008

QUINCY, Pa. - Ralph J. Strike, 85, of Quincy United Methodist Home, and formerly of 2264 Wayne Road in Chambersburg, Pa., died Wednesday, June 18, 2008, at the nursing home.

Born Jan. 16, 1923, in Guilford Township, Pa., he was the son of the late S. Walter and Catherine M. Gipe Strike.

He was employed by Valley Quarries near Chambersburg for 35 years, retiring in 1986.

He was a member of the Old German Baptist Brethren.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth M. Bayer Strike, whom he married Dec. 31, 1958; one stepsister, Thelma Harshman of Waynesboro; two stepbrothers, Raymond Gipe of Chambersburg, and Andrew Gipe of Shady Grove, Pa.; and 14 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Della Myers; one brother, Ray Strike; stepmother, Anna Ebersole Gipe Strike; and one stepbrother, Elwood Gipe.

Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Falling Spring Old German Baptist Brethren Meeting House. The Falling Spring Ministry will officiate. Burial will follow in Gipes Grove Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg.
