James Buchanan ag issues team places first at state event

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - On Tuesday, June 10, 31 FFA members from James Buchanan High School traveled to Penn State University for the 79th Pennsylvania FFA summer convention.

Teams competed in agriculture issues forum, agriculture sales, agronomy, agriculture mechanics, dairy judging, horse judging, farm business management, and poultry judging.

Twenty-one members received a medal for their individual efforts.

Mandy Clark, Candice Dayley, Kalina Gipe, Garrett Rice, Chance Kelley, Tobin Stuff, Jake Brake, Heather Hartung, Tyler Funk, Chevy Martin, and Tonya Grissinger received gold.

Daniel McClung, Garrison Plessinger, Zach McQuade, and Derek Forsyth received silver.

Joel Kyler, Coty Covert, Kevin Breakall, Kaitlyn Hoton, Alex Fahnestock, and Aaron Musser received bronze.

The ag issues forum team of Mandy Clark, Candice Dayley, Kalina Gipe, Chance Kelley, Garrett Rice, and Tobin Stuff placed first for their presentation on the labeling of milk and the use of rBST.


They will be representing Pennsylvania at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis in October.

In the agronomy contest, members identified crops, weeds, seeds, plant problems and completed tests. Jake Brake, Garrison Plessinger, Robbie Hartung, and Brian McCulloh placed second as a team and will travel to the Eastern States Exposition in September to compete.

The agriculture sales team of Daniel McClung, Coty Covert, Kevin Breakall, and Devin Carbaugh placed second, as did the dairy judging team of Tyler Funk, Heather Hartung, Chevy Martin, and Brad Ryder.

In the Farm Business Management contest, Tonya Grissinger placed second as an individual and Kaitlyn Hoton placed fifth.

Special thanks should be given to Matt Martin, Ashley Brown, Mitch Funk and Garrett Rice who all helped to coach one of the teams in the competition.
