It's good to see Hulk do what Hulk does - smash!

Movie review: "The Incredible Hulk"

Movie review: "The Incredible Hulk"

After the commercial failure that was "Hulk" a few years ago, Marvel started over. Much like Warner Bros. revamped the Batman series with "Batman Begins" in 2005.

The revisions to "The Incredible Hulk" couldn't have been better. A complete recast of the characters has put Edward Norton in the big purple pants this time around, and the fit is perfect. There is no other actor out there who could have done a better job portraying the scientist Bruce Banner.

Going into the theater I was confused though. I was under the assumption that this was a sequel, mainly because this movie starts out with Banner in Brazil, which was where "Hulk" ended. But in the opening credits it shows a completely different origin story. I think maybe Marvel wanted to avoid criticism that might have come if they'd done an origin story so soon after 2003's "Hulk" did.

The first Hulk movie was said to have too much darkness, not enough like the old TV show, and did not have "enough Hulk smash." Marvel seems to have taken the hint. The darkness is out.

Amazingly, it can be considered a spiritual continuation of the Incredible Hulk TV show that debuted in the '70s. The origin story from the opening credits is like watching the opening of the show. Plus - a very pleasant surprise - the filmmakers brought back the sad walking away song that was played at the end of every television episode. My favorite part of the whole movie though is actually when Hulk says, "Hulk Smash!" That is just too great.

Seeing "The Incredible Hulk" made me want to go buy the video game and some Hulk hands from a toy store. It is just too good. And I hope that the movie is enough of a success to lead to a sequel so the Hulk bus stays around for a long time. I give "The Incredible Hulk" 9 angry green men out of 10.
