Spike falls from railroad bridge in Sharpsburg, breaking W.Va. man's windshield

June 17, 2008

SHARPSBURG (AP) -- Maryland State Police say a Martinsburg, W.Va., man narrowly escaped injury when a spike fell from a railroad bridge and smashed a side windshield on his vehicle.

The spike fell Sunday afternoon as Paul Martz drove beneath the bridge on Md. 34 in Sharpsburg. Police say workers were replacing cross ties on the bridge, but it's not known why the spike fell.

While the railroad was not fined or charged, it could be held civilly responsible.
