Phyllis N. Hoffman, 90

BOONSBORO - Phyllis N. "Dottie" Hoffman, 90, a resident of Reeders Memorial Home, died Saturday, June 14, 2008, at Washington County Hospital.

Born in Trego, Md., she was the daughter of the late Elmer L. and L. Marie Forrest Wade.

Her husband, Jesse Hoffman, died in 1962.

She was employed by Baltimore and Ohio Railroad for 40 years, retiring in 1983.

She is survived by one sister, Aldeth Moore of Beaver Creek; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Theresa Grim, and two brothers, Elmer Wade Jr. and Gerald E. Wade.

It was her request to have no public services or viewing, so private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Marcella M. Johnson, 85

Marcella M. Johnson, 85, of Mapleville Road, Hagerstown, died Saturday, June 14, 2008, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Jan. 16, 1923, in Jamestown, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Clifford O. Peterson Sr. and Margaret Lawson Peterson.

Her husband of 64 years, William George Johnson, died April 11, 2007.

She graduated from high school in Niagara Falls, N.Y., and graduated from nursing school in Buffalo, N.Y.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Smithsburg.

She is survived by one daughter, Margaret A. Plummer of Hampton, Va.; sons, William B. Johnson of Manassas, Va., and Gary W. Johnson of Hagerstown; one brother, Clifford O. Peterson Jr. of Niagara Falls; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two nieces.

Memorial services will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Smithsburg. Pastor Gerry Johnson will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity of Washington County, 20 S. Prospect St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Lawrence R. Matter, 82



APRIL 25, 1926-JUNE 14, 2008

Lawrence Richard "Crock" Matter, 82, of 35 Hump Road, Hagerstown, died Saturday, June 14, 2008, at the Baltimore VA Medical Center.

Born April 25, 1926, in Halifax, Pa., he was the son of the late Charles and Fanny Fetterhof Matter.

He was employed by Kenosha Auto Transport (KAT).

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He is survived by his ex-wife, Patricia Matter of Hagerstown; two daughters, Karen Wyman and Melody Matter, both of Harrisburg, Pa.; one son, Richard Matter of Hagerstown; one sister, Arlene Kolva of Lewisberry, Pa.; one brother, Harry Matter of Halifax; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown. The Rev. J. Norman Mayer will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

Wilma M. Truitt, 76



OCT. 8, 1931-JUNE 13, 2008

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Wilma May "Betty" Truitt, 76, of Berkeley Springs, and formerly of Warfordsburg, Pa., died Friday, June 13, 2008, while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.

Born Oct. 8, 1931, in Cumberland, Md., she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Lillian Rice Bennett.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Preston Truitt Jr., on Dec. 6, 2004.

She attended public schools in Cumberland.

She had worked as a certified nursing assistant.

She was a Methodist.

She is survived by two daughters, Amanda L. Ekatah of Berkeley Springs and Laura L. Kerns of Hagerstown; one son, Vernon L. Kerns Jr. of Berkeley Springs; one half sister, Connie Keys of Dumfries, Va.; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services and burial will be private.

Dennis M. Mellott, 65



JUNE 6, 1943-JUNE 14, 2008

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Dennis M. "Denny" Mellott, 65, of McConnellsburg, died Saturday, June 14, 2008, at Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital.

Born June 6, 1943, in McConnellsburg, he was the son of Marian L. Sipes Hunter of McConnellsburg and the late Clyde A. Mellott.

He sold insurance for Franklin Life Insurance Co.

He was a member of Emmanuel Chapel Church in Smithsburg.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by one daughter, Kimberly S. Barnhart of Mercersburg, Pa.; one son, Keith L. Mellott of Mercersburg; his companion, Nancy L. Carter of Boonsboro; one sister, Lindell Ramsey of McConnellsburg; his former wife, Joyce A. Mellott of Hustontown, Pa.; two granddaughters; one niece; and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Patty D. Hunter; maternal grandparents, Scott and Beatrice Sipes; and paternal grandparents, Bryan and Lottie Mellott.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home, McConnellsburg. Pastor Erik Peel will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, McConnellsburg.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the services Wednesday at the funeral home.
